To enjoy the state’s features at its full capacity, traveling by car is a must. While Phoenix and its surrounding metropolitan area does have a public transportation system, it is nowhere near an efficient form of travel compared to driving a vehicle.

Adventuring out of Mesa

Planning a road trip or just want to get out of town? We recommend these trails for those times when you just want to indulge in your wanderlust. If you harbor a love for adventure close to your heart, these scenic driving trails should be your next go-to destination!

Coronado Trail

One can reach the trail by driving out of Mesa eastbound on the US-60, and continuing until reaching the Coronado Trail exit at US-191.

If you’re on the hunt for an adventurous road trip, the Coronado Trail may be right up your alley. This windy and narrow road is known for its 460 curves on an uphill climb, with the esteemed recognition for being one of the most elevated mountain roads at over 9000 ft at its highest point.

Apache Trail

The start of the Apache Trail can be quickly reached from Mesa by first driving eastbound on the US 60 until reaching the Apache Trail exit.

Although it may be risky to drive at certain parts of the year due to storm conditions, this road features 40 miles of unpaved driving through the Tonto National Forest and Superstition Mountains. A path for thrill seekers, the Apache Trail cannot be driven with especially large vehicles such as RV due to its unpredictable dirt terrain.

Route 66

The Arizona part of the well-known and iconic Route 66 can be reached from Mesa by taking the AZ-101 north towards Sedona.

Now decommissioned, the route is known for being “America’s Mother Road” and was the primary pathway Americans took when traveling west – most notably during the great Dust Storms of the Great

Depression era. Although it is not a usable highway anymore, portions of Route 66 can still be driven through today. It is engrained in America’s history as a road that embodies the land of opportunity.
